Gait and Balance Laboratory
Each year, nearly 90,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the United States alone. This disease, along with many other neurological conditions, significantly increases an individual’s risk for falls and associated injuries. While medications can be used to treat the severity of the symptoms presented by Parkinson’s disease, a cure is not readily available and the inherent risk for fall-related injuries remain.
Our lab focuses on understanding ways to predict and prevent falls in neurological populations including people with Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. We apply biomechanical (i.e. motion capture), neuropsychological (cognitive assessments), and imaging techniques (fMRI) to achieve these goals.
